Frequently Asked Questions - Guy Strand Wire
- How long should guy wires be?
As guy wires should be utilised to support a structure that is free-standing, it depends on your structure’s height for how long guy wires should be. For example, for light masts, guy wires are used for structures that are approximately 5m high (and above). At 5m high, a guy wire is used at the centre of the pole to prevent swinging. Heavy-duty light structures at heights of 10m (and above) that have a secure, bolted base, may only utilise one set of guy wires, at the top of the pole.
- What can I use as a guy wire?
The materials that are needed for a standard guy wire installation are guy wires, guy ring(s), screw eye, and turnbuckles. Six-strand 18 or 20 gauge galvanized steel guy wire is recommended for general use, though an 18 gauge wire is recommended for areas which experience high-wind, and installations that are over 6m above the uppermost support.
- Why do they call it a guy wire?
In relation to guy wires, the word guy derives from the Dutch word, gei, which was a rope used to fix a furled sail to a mast. When it came to any line and when used to keep a structure stable, it can also be named strand wire, stay wire, guy strand, or guy cable.
- What is a Guyline used for?
A guy-wire, guy-line, guy-rope or guide-wire, also known as simply a guy, is a tensioned cable designed to create or contribute toward the stability of a free-standing structure.
- What are the sizes of guy wire?
When referring to galvanised steel guy wire rope, this high-strength material’s diameter is 9.5mm thick with a weight (per kilometre in length) of 430kg.
